Maafushi Land Reclamation Opens New Opportunities for Tourism Investment
A major land reclamation project underway in Maafushi is set to transform the island into a new hotspot for tourism investment, creating exciting prospects for both local and international stakeholders.
Located just 27 kilometers from Malé, Maafushi is already one of the Maldives’ most popular local islands for budget tourism. The expansion of its land area through reclamation aims to meet growing demand and unlock new space for resorts, guesthouses, recreational facilities, and tourism-related businesses.
Government officials and local councils have emphasized that the project is part of a broader strategy to decentralize tourism growth and promote sustainable economic development in the atolls.
“This land reclamation initiative is not just about expanding territory—it’s about expanding opportunity,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Tourism. “Maafushi is a proven tourism success story. With more land, we can now accommodate new investors and diversify offerings.”
The reclaimed area is expected to be designated for mixed-use development, including eco-friendly resorts, public beaches, restaurants, and marine activity centers. Investors are being encouraged to submit proposals that align with sustainable tourism principles and contribute to the local economy.
With Maafushi’s proximity to Velana International Airport, strong brand recognition among budget travelers, and a supportive local business environment, the new land reclamation area is anticipated to generate strong investor interest.
