Homeschooling in Maldives Shows Promising Results Under Education Ministry’s Monitoring

MALE, Maldives – Homeschooling, once a rare choice in the Maldives’ traditional education landscape, is gradually gaining attention as more families turn to it for flexible and personalized learning—now under official monitoring by the Ministry of Education.

According to ministry officials, a small but growing number of students are being homeschooled across the country, particularly in areas where access to quality schools is limited or where parents seek tailored academic experiences. These homeschooling arrangements are subject to strict oversight, ensuring they meet national curriculum standards and maintain academic integrity.

Early assessments by the Education Ministry suggest that some homeschooled students are showing notable academic performance, especially in core subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science. In several cases, students have outperformed their peers in conventional schools, highlighting the potential of focused, one-on-one learning environments.

“We’re seeing encouraging outcomes from families who are dedicated and well-structured in their homeschooling approach,” said Fathimath Shifaza, an official from the Ministry’s Quality Assurance Department. “But it’s important that homeschooling remains accountable and aligned with the national education goals.”

Parents who choose homeschooling often cite flexibility, individual learning pace, and a safer learning environment as key benefits. However, educators emphasize the need for social interaction, extracurricular development, and regular assessments to ensure a well-rounded education.

The ministry continues to monitor and evaluate homeschooling programs, offering guidance and setting standards for curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment. While still a niche choice, homeschooling in the Maldives is beginning to demonstrate its potential—provided it remains within a strong framework of educational oversight and support.
