Mohamed Nasheed Rejoins MDP Ahead of 2028 Elections: Comeback or Controversy?

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has officially rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), rekindling a political partnership that once brought democratic change to the Maldives. His return, just three years ahead of the 2028 presidential election, has sparked both excitement and skepticism within political circles and among the public.

A Return to Familiar Grounds

Nasheed, who co-founded the MDP and led the country as its first democratically elected president in 2008, parted ways with the party in 2023 after internal rifts and ideological clashes with the then leadership. His return now, accompanied by a public statement promising to “revive the movement and deliver victory,” is being positioned as a bid to unite the fragmented opposition and challenge the ruling PPM-PNC coalition.

Popularity in Question

While Nasheed remains a globally recognized figure, questions linger over whether his influence within the Maldives has waned. Once hailed as a reformist icon, his recent political experiments—including the failed ‘The Democrats’ splinter party—drew limited public traction.

Political analyst Mariyam Shifa told Maldives Gazette:

“Nasheed’s charisma is undeniable, but his political capital is not what it used to be. The youth who supported him in 2008 are now older—and more skeptical. He will have to rebuild trust and avoid the perception that this is a move of desperation.”

Can MDP Rebuild Around Nasheed?

Some within the MDP welcome Nasheed’s return as a chance to rally the base and reunify the party after several years of internal division. Others, however, worry that old rivalries and unresolved leadership tensions could resurface.

A senior MDP official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:

“We need to look forward, not backward. Nasheed’s return can help if he’s willing to support new leadership and ideas. But if it becomes about reclaiming control, we risk another breakdown.”

Road to 2028: Strategy or Gamble?

Nasheed’s political comeback could potentially reshape the opposition landscape. With MDP still holding significant support in key constituencies, and the current administration under President Muizzu facing criticism over economic issues, a unified and strategic opposition front could pose a real challenge in 2028.

However, much depends on whether Nasheed is seen as an asset—or a distraction.

As Mohamed Nasheed rejoins the MDP with ambitions to steer the party to victory in 2028, the question remains: can he still inspire and unify as he once did? Or has his political star dimmed in a rapidly evolving Maldivian political scene?

Only time—and the people—will decide.
